The Most Common Causes of Sewer Pipe Damage and How to Prevent Them

sewer pipe damage

For the homeowners the issue of sewer pipe damage is one that must be evaded at all cost. Nobody wants to come home to a sewer smell and water still in the sink from the morning. Also, the consequences of dealing with such an issue can be unpleasant, messy and particularly expensive. Luckily, there are measures that can be taken to avoid such issues. In this article, we will explain the most frequent reasons for sewer pipe damage, how to detect the damage and what steps to take to minimize the impact.

What Are the Signs of Sewer Pipe Damage?

If you’ve noticed that your sinks and tub are draining slowly or if there’s a foul, gassy odour in your home, it may be a sign of sewer pipe damage. It’s important to have a professional plumber inspect your pipes to identify the root cause and address the issue before it leads to more serious problems. There can be a handful of reasons why your pipes are damaged, and we will discuss them further in this article.

Some of the Most Common Causes of Sewer Pipe Damage

Tree Roots

Tree roots are an ordinary cause of sewer pipe damage. As trees grow, their roots delve deep into the earth and if they come into contact with your sewer pipes, it can result in damage. In time, the roots can pierce through the pipes and cause cracks or breakages. To prevent this from happening, it is vital to refrain from planting trees in close proximity to your sewer lines. In the event that trees are already present, it is advised to have them inspected by a professional on a regular basis.

Grease Build-up

Another common cause of sewer pipe damage is the build-up of grease. When grease is poured down your drain, it can accumulate and block your pipes. Over time, this blockage can become so severe that it leads to pipes bursting. Avoid pouring grease down your drain and instead dispose of it in the trash so that you won’t have to face this problem in the future.

Ageing Pipes

Sewer pipes are strong and mighty, but even they grow old. When it happens, they tend to become fragile and vulnerable to damage. If your home was constructed prior to the 1970s, it is probable that it has sewer pipes made of clay or cast iron, which are particularly susceptible to damage. Get your pipes examined by a professional plumber and consider replacing them with modern PVC pipes if necessary.

Ground Movement

Sewer pipe damage can also be caused by the ground movement. And we are not talking about just extraordinary things like earthquakes here — even if they, too, are not particularly friends with your pipes. Even the construction work in your area can be enough for the pipe damage. But it is not a reason to be scared of every renovation around — just make sure to have your pipes inspected after any significant construction work is done in your area and consider reinforcing your pipes with additional supports.

Avoid Sewer Pipe Damage by Consulting a Professional Plumber

Sewer pipe damage can be a real pain in the neck for many homeowners, but these all problems can be avoided with the proper care and maintenance. By adopting the measures outlined in this article, you can prevent the most frequent causes of sewer pipe damage and ensure that their sewer pipes remain in optimal working condition for years to come. Remember to have your pipes inspected by a professional on a regular basis and take immediate action if any signs of damage are noticed.

We're just about to have our heat pump and new water heater installed, so I can't speak to that experience yet, but I had to say how helpful their sales rep, Jeff, was with all of my questions to get settled into a plan. I'm one of those people who like to know what's going on line by line, and his patience and knowledge was very appreciated!

I had a need to replace our 50G gas water heater. Received several quotes from various contractors. Fuse was the most cost-effective proposal. Quote included new Bradford White heater, new expansion tank (did not have one before), new gas supply line to the heater, new drain pan, new Corro-Protec powered anode to prevent corrosion, and city permit. Installation was smooth. Workmanship excellent. Passed inspection with no issues.

Henry and Alex did a fantastic job installing our new heat pump system! They worked hard over two days to get everything set up perfectly. They were punctual, professional, respectful of our home, and extremely knowledgeable. The new system is running great. Huge thanks to Henry and Alex for their hard work--I definitely recommend this team for your HVAC needs!

Update: In what I am pretty convinced was a total coincidence, shortly after the heat pump was installed our gas hot water heater stopped working. I couldn't find anything that the installer would have done to cause it since the symptom was that the gas flame would not stay on. I called Fuse to see what they had to say and within a hour two technicians came out to take a look. After a couple hours of troubleshooting they thought it might be the control board. Of note they didn't charge us for their time. The gas HWH was to be replaced by Fuse with a heat pump based HWH so it seemed silly to invest much effort. Unfortunately there wasn't one of their electricians available for a couple of weeks to install the needed sub-panel. On a follow up call to Fuse, I reminded them that we also have an EV charger in the garage that they might be able to temporarily "borrow" the circuit. The next day the team of Ronnie and Alex came out and installed the new HWH using the EV charger's circuit (having to use a public charger was a small price to pay to having hot water). Once again, a professional job with great attention to detail. Last week Zorik the electrician arrived as scheduled to complete the installation. He worked with me on where I would prefer the sub-panel be installed. Within a few hours, our EV charger was back in business. I appreciated that Zorik took the time to review what breakers were moved so that I could update my records. I was confident that the job (and the others) were all were properly compliant with the building codes. Worth noting, the technician from an independent company came out to do the duct work testing (which passed). As he was leaving the subject of Fuse came up. His comment was that they are the best in the Bay Area.
