Fixing Leaks to Reduce Water Waste

Checking for Leaks in Faucets and Pipes

The annoying ticking noise is not the biggest problem of a dripping faucet. A little but persistent water leak can result in 3,000 gallons of wasted water per year. Sealing these tiny drops inside your pipes and inspecting your home regularly is one of the ways to reduce water consumption and keep your bills low.

The Toilet Dye Test for Leaks

Toilet leaks are silent but costly. Add a few drops of food coloring into the toilet tank and wait 15 minutes. If you’ve noticed that the color appears in the bowl without flushing, it is a sign of a leak that needs fixing.

How to Repair a Running Toilet

Don’t let your running toilet waste up to 200 gallons per day. Most issues are coming from a worn-out flapper valve. Replacing it is a quick, inexpensive fix that can drastically cut your water usage.

Replacing Worn-Out Washers and Seals

If your faucets continue dripping after being turned off, worn-out washers or seals may be the culprit. Also you can reduce water bill by replacing them with a simple DIY repair that prevents water loss. Read more about leaks and how to fight them in our article

Upgrading to Water-Efficient Fixtures

Benefits of Low-Flow Faucets and Showerheads

Another advice on how to lower water bill is switching to low-flow faucets and showerheads. That can reduce water usage by 30-50% without sacrificing water pressure. These upgrades pay for themselves in reduced utility costs. And if you accidentally caught your showerhead leaking read here how to fix the problem

Installing Water-Saving Aerators

Aerators mix air with water, reducing flow while maintaining pressure. They are an affordable addition to any faucet, helping you cut down on household water waste.

Choosing WaterSense-Labeled Appliances

WaterSense-certified dishwashers and washing machines use up to 50% less water than standard models, significantly lowering your water bill over time.

The Efficiency of Dual-Flush Toilets

Replacing older toilets with dual-flush models allows you to use less water for liquid waste and full power for solid waste, reducing water consumption.

Smart Habits for Water Conservation

Turning Off Taps When Not in Use

Also a great tip on how to save money on water bill is simply turning off the tap while brushing your teeth can save over 8 gallons per day. Encourage household members to adopt this habit.

How Short Showers Save Gallons of Water

Reducing your shower time by just two minutes can save over 1,500 gallons per year. Challenge yourself to shorter showers to see the impact on your bill.

Efficient Dishwashing and Handwashing Techniques

Instead of leaving the tap running, fill a small basin for rinsing when washing dishes or hands. Soon you will notice that such a small change makes a huge difference in your water bill.

The Best Way to Water Plants Without Waste

Watering plants early in the morning or late at night reduces evaporation, allowing plants to absorb moisture efficiently.

Optimizing Laundry and Dishwashing

Running Full Loads for Efficiency

Washing machines and dishwashers use nearly the same amount of water regardless of load size. Always run full loads to maximize water efficiency.

Using Eco-Friendly Settings

Modern appliances come with eco modes that use less water while still ensuring clean results. Use them whenever possible.

The Impact of High-Efficiency Washers

High-efficiency washing machines use up to 40% less water than standard ones, making them a worthwhile investment for long-term savings.

Washing Clothes with Cold Water

Using cold water not only reduces energy costs but also prevents additional water waste due to unnecessary hot water usage.

Outdoor Water-Saving Hacks

Smart Irrigation Strategies

If you are still wondering how to lower water bill, try to install a smart irrigation system that adjusts watering based on weather conditions, preventing unnecessary water use.

Rainwater Harvesting for Household Use

Collecting rainwater for gardening, car washing, and even household chores can cut down your reliance on tap water.

Drip Irrigation vs. Sprinklers

Drip irrigation provides targeted watering, reducing evaporation and unnecessary runoff, unlike sprinklers that waste water through overspray.

Mulching to Retain Soil Moisture

Adding mulch around plants helps retain moisture, reducing the frequency of watering.

Reusing and Recycling Water

Collecting and Repurposing Greywater

Greywater from sinks, showers, and washing machines can be repurposed for toilet flushing and irrigation. Don’t forget to clean your pipes regularly with our handy on how to make it.

Using Leftover Cooking Water for Plants

Instead of throwing out water used for boiling pasta or vegetables, let it cool and use it to water your garden.

Installing a Greywater System

Greywater systems allow households to reuse wastewater safely, significantly lowering water usage.

We're just about to have our heat pump and new water heater installed, so I can't speak to that experience yet, but I had to say how helpful their sales rep, Jeff, was with all of my questions to get settled into a plan. I'm one of those people who like to know what's going on line by line, and his patience and knowledge was very appreciated!

I had a need to replace our 50G gas water heater. Received several quotes from various contractors. Fuse was the most cost-effective proposal. Quote included new Bradford White heater, new expansion tank (did not have one before), new gas supply line to the heater, new drain pan, new Corro-Protec powered anode to prevent corrosion, and city permit. Installation was smooth. Workmanship excellent. Passed inspection with no issues.

Henry and Alex did a fantastic job installing our new heat pump system! They worked hard over two days to get everything set up perfectly. They were punctual, professional, respectful of our home, and extremely knowledgeable. The new system is running great. Huge thanks to Henry and Alex for their hard work--I definitely recommend this team for your HVAC needs!

Update: In what I am pretty convinced was a total coincidence, shortly after the heat pump was installed our gas hot water heater stopped working. I couldn't find anything that the installer would have done to cause it since the symptom was that the gas flame would not stay on. I called Fuse to see what they had to say and within a hour two technicians came out to take a look. After a couple hours of troubleshooting they thought it might be the control board. Of note they didn't charge us for their time. The gas HWH was to be replaced by Fuse with a heat pump based HWH so it seemed silly to invest much effort. Unfortunately there wasn't one of their electricians available for a couple of weeks to install the needed sub-panel. On a follow up call to Fuse, I reminded them that we also have an EV charger in the garage that they might be able to temporarily "borrow" the circuit. The next day the team of Ronnie and Alex came out and installed the new HWH using the EV charger's circuit (having to use a public charger was a small price to pay to having hot water). Once again, a professional job with great attention to detail. Last week Zorik the electrician arrived as scheduled to complete the installation. He worked with me on where I would prefer the sub-panel be installed. Within a few hours, our EV charger was back in business. I appreciated that Zorik took the time to review what breakers were moved so that I could update my records. I was confident that the job (and the others) were all were properly compliant with the building codes. Worth noting, the technician from an independent company came out to do the duct work testing (which passed). As he was leaving the subject of Fuse came up. His comment was that they are the best in the Bay Area.
