Air Conditioning Repair in Palo Alto

Imagine a hot July mid-day and the AC vents are pushing out air that’s barely cooler than the room itself. That’s usually when people start googling air conditioning repair in Palo Alto — not before, always right in the middle of it.

Fuse Service has been answering that call for years. We send licensed techs out across Palo Alto and the wider Bay Area for AC repair, ductless AC services, and the kind of AC maintenance that keeps you from ending up in this situation in the first place. We can offer you same day appointments if possible, fully stocked trucks, and a tech who can usually tell you what’s wrong before they’ve even opened the panel.

Common Air Conditioning Problems We Fix

A common AC problem in Palo Alto falls into one of a few buckets. Our techs have seen these enough that they can usually narrow it down over the phone.

Warm Air Instead of Cool
Warm air out of the vents means one of three things — refrigerant is low, the compressor’s dying, or a contactor got stuck. We rule out all of them before touching anything. That’s the whole reason most of these calls end in one trip.
Weak or No Airflow
Imagine a dirty filter. Or ductwork that’s partly blocked. Or even a blower motor that’s finally giving up after years of running. Weak airflow is honestly one of the easier fixes on this list — the trouble is homeowners tend to shrug it off until the whole unit overheats.
Strange Noises or Smells
Grinding or rattling… That faint burning smell that makes you nervous… These almost never mean nothing. Loose fan blades, a motor bearing on its last legs, wiring that’s overheating — we bump these calls to the front of the line because they can turn into something worse fast.
Frequent Cycling or Tripped Breakers
AC shutting off every few minutes? Breaker keeps flipping? That’s not the system being moody — something electrical or mechanical is genuinely struggling under there. It doesn’t fix itself either. Wait it out and you’re just shaving years off the unit.
Thermostat Not Responding
Sometimes there’s nothing wrong with the AC at all — dead batteries, a loose wire, or a thermostat that’s simply worn out. It’s the first thing we rule out on a lot of AC service calls, mainly because it’s the fastest possible fix if that’s all it is.

AC Systems We Repair and Maintain

Our techs work on pretty much every AC setup you’ll find in a Bay Area home. Whether it’s systems humming along since the ’90s or brand-new ductless units — our pros can handle almost everything.

Central Air Conditioners
It’s still the most common setup we see in Palo Alto. Compressors, condensers, coils, the ductwork tying it all together — so, central AC is a huge chunk of our day-to-day air conditioning repair work.
Heat Pumps
Heat pumps cool your home in summer and heat it in winter, which means they take twice the wear that a straight AC unit does. We pay close attention to the reversing valve especially, since that's the part that lets the system switch modes in the first place.
Ductless Mini-Splits
Ductless air conditioning has become the go-to for additions, converted garages, and older homes that never had ductwork to begin with. We install and repair ductless mini-splits regularly, including refrigerant lines and the indoor head units themselves.
Thermostats and Controls
Smart thermostats fail in their own weird ways — bad wiring, calibration that's drifted off, an app that won't connect. We troubleshoot the whole chain so your controls actually match what the system is doing, not just what the display says.
Ductwork and Airflow Components
A surprising amount of your cooling gets lost to leaky or disconnected ductwork before it ever reaches a room. We track those leaks down, seal them, and repair what's damaged so the cold air you paid for actually shows up where you need it.

AC Maintenance That Helps Prevent Surprise Breakdowns

A yearly tune-up costs a fraction of what an emergency repair does, and it’s the single easiest way to avoid a breakdown in the middle of August.

Here’s what’s actually included in our AC maintenance visits:

  • Refrigerant level check and top-off
  • Coil and condenser cleaning
  • Tightening loose electrical connections
  • Filter replacement
  • Thermostat calibration
  • A full system performance test before we leave
  • Other checks

We’ve noticed something over the years: homeowners who stick to an air conditioning maintenance schedule tend to squeeze five, sometimes ten, extra years out of their equipment compared to the ones who only call once something’s already broken. Given what a new system costs, that’s not a small difference.

Why Local Homeowners Work With Fuse Service

Homeowners keep calling us back to book air conditioning services in Palo Alto for a simple reason — we don’t treat a repair like a sales opportunity.

Licensed, Insured, and Locally Trusted
Our company carries a California HVAC license and full insurance. That’s not a nice-to-have for us. It’s the minimum bar for letting someone touch the wiring and refrigerant lines inside your house.
Fast, Honest Diagnostics
We’ll tell you what’s wrong, what it costs, and what your real options are — before a single tool comes out of the truck. No surprise line items showing up on the invoice later.
Available When You Need Us
Emergencies don’t check what time it is, so we don’t either. We offer AC repair across the Bay Area and same day AC services more often than not. And remember that our support works 24/7.

We're just about to have our heat pump and new water heater installed, so I can't speak to that experience yet, but I had to say how helpful their sales rep, Jeff, was with all of my questions to get settled into a plan. I'm one of those people who like to know what's going on line by line, and his patience and knowledge was very appreciated!

I had a need to replace our 50G gas water heater. Received several quotes from various contractors. Fuse was the most cost-effective proposal. Quote included new Bradford White heater, new expansion tank (did not have one before), new gas supply line to the heater, new drain pan, new Corro-Protec powered anode to prevent corrosion, and city permit. Installation was smooth. Workmanship excellent. Passed inspection with no issues.

Update: In what I am pretty convinced was a total coincidence, shortly after the heat pump was installed our gas hot water heater stopped working. I couldn't find anything that the installer would have done to cause it since the symptom was that the gas flame would not stay on. I called Fuse to see what they had to say and within a hour two technicians came out to take a look. After a couple hours of troubleshooting they thought it might be the control board. Of note they didn't charge us for their time. The gas HWH was to be replaced by Fuse with a heat pump based HWH so it seemed silly to invest much effort. Unfortunately there wasn't one of their electricians available for a couple of weeks to install the needed sub-panel. On a follow up call to Fuse, I reminded them that we also have an EV charger in the garage that they might be able to temporarily "borrow" the circuit. The next day the team of Ronnie and Alex came out and installed the new HWH using the EV charger's circuit (having to use a public charger was a small price to pay to having hot water). Once again, a professional job with great attention to detail. Last week Zorik the electrician arrived as scheduled to complete the installation. He worked with me on where I would prefer the sub-panel be installed. Within a few hours, our EV charger was back in business. I appreciated that Zorik took the time to review what breakers were moved so that I could update my records. I was confident that the job (and the others) were all were properly compliant with the building codes. Worth noting, the technician from an independent company came out to do the duct work testing (which passed). As he was leaving the subject of Fuse came up. His comment was that they are the best in the Bay Area.
