Water Line Repair & Replacement in San Jose, CA

Fuse Service provides water line repair in San Jose for homes and businesses. Our pros deal with underground leaks, damaged main water lines, and failing service line repairs. Whether it’s a single cracked fitting under the driveway or a full water line replacement, our crews diagnose the problem the same day they arrive, and then get straight to work if it’s comfortable for you.

We’ve been fixing and replacing water lines across Santa Clara County for almost a decade. Before any work starts, you will see a written estimate — not after. Plus, we are a licensed and insured contractor, fully vetted before setting foot on your property.

Water Line Problems We Repair Across San Jose

Not every water line problem looks the same, and not every fix is the same either. Here’s what we handle most often for homeowners and property managers across San Jose.

Water Line Leak Detection

Before any repair starts, we find the leak. Using acoustic sensors and pressure testing, we pinpoint the exact location of the break without tearing up your entire yard or driveway. Leak detection is the first step in almost every job we take on, and it’s the difference between a targeted repair and an expensive guessing game.

Underground Water Line Leak Repair

Left alone, an underground leak gets worse, not better. Constant moisture wears down the soil around the pipe, pipe corrosion sets in, and eventually the ground above it can sink or crack a driveway. We dig only where the line is actually damaged, patch or replace that section, and leave everything else untouched.

Main Water Line Repair

When the main water line supplying your entire property fails, water pressure drops everywhere at once — sinks, showers, irrigation, all of it. We repair breaks in the main water line quickly, because this isn’t a line you can live without for long.

Water Service Line Replacement

Some lines are too far gone to patch. If your service line is made of aging galvanized pipe or shows repeated failures, full water service line replacement is usually the smarter, cheaper option in the long run.

Trenchless Water Line Replacement

Digging up an entire yard to fix one bad section of pipe is overkill, and trenchless replacement skips it. We pull a new line through the path of the old one, so there’s no trench running the length of your property — just a couple of access points and a lawn that survives the job. It’s the option we reach for when a broken water line runs under a driveway, patio, or mature landscaping you’d rather not tear up.

Signs Your Main Water Line May Be Leaking

Most water line leaks don’t show up as a geyser in your front yard. They show up as smaller changes you might miss unless you know what to look for.

Low Water Pressure
If pressure drops across the whole house — not just one faucet — there’s likely a break somewhere in the line before it reaches your plumbing.
A High Water Bill With No Clear Reason
A water bill that jumps without any change in usage is one of the most reliable signs of an underground leak. Water is going somewhere, and it’s not down your drain.
Wet or Sunken Spots in the Yard
A soggy patch of lawn, a small sinkhole, or one oddly green section of grass usually means water is pooling underground before it ever reaches the surface.
Sound of Running Water With Everything Off
Every fixture off, and you can still hear water moving through the pipes? That’s not normal, and it’s worth having someone check it out.

Repair or Replace? The Condition of the Pipe Decides

The right call between repair and full replacement comes down to pipe material, age, and how many times the line has already failed. Here’s a quick breakdown.

Pipe MaterialTypical LifespanRepair or Replace
Copper pipe50+ yearsUsually repairable if damage is localized
Galvanized pipe20–50 yearsOften needs full replacement due to internal corrosion
PEX40–50 yearsRepairable; replacement rare unless installation was faulty
Old cast iron or steel25–50 yearsTypically replaced, not repaired

Water line work touches both plumbing rules and property boundaries. A few things are worth knowing before a crew shows up.

Who Is Responsible for the Line After the Water Meter?

In San Jose, the property owner is responsible for everything from the water meter to the house. San Jose Water or the municipal utility maintains the line up to the meter; anything past that point, including repairs or a full water line repipe, is on you.

When a Plumbing Permit and Inspection Are Required

San Jose requires a plumbing permit and a city inspection for most water service line replacement jobs, and the inspection has to happen before the trench gets backfilled. Skip it, and it can come back to bite you later — particularly if you’re selling the house down the road. We handle the permit and schedule the inspection ourselves, so it’s one less thing on your plate.

From Leak Check to Final Pressure Test

Every project follows the same process, whether it’s a small repair or a full water line replacement.

Step 1 — Leak Detection and Diagnosis
We locate the leak using acoustic equipment and confirm the cause before any digging starts.
Step 2 — Excavation or Trenchless Access
Our pros either dig a targeted trench or use trenchless methods to reach the line.
Step 3 — Repair, Repipe, or Full Replacement
We repair the damaged section, or replace the full line if the pipe's condition calls for it.
Step 4 — Final Pressure Test and Cleanup
Once the new line is connected, we run a pressure test to confirm everything holds.

We're just about to have our heat pump and new water heater installed, so I can't speak to that experience yet, but I had to say how helpful their sales rep, Jeff, was with all of my questions to get settled into a plan. I'm one of those people who like to know what's going on line by line, and his patience and knowledge was very appreciated!

I had a need to replace our 50G gas water heater. Received several quotes from various contractors. Fuse was the most cost-effective proposal. Quote included new Bradford White heater, new expansion tank (did not have one before), new gas supply line to the heater, new drain pan, new Corro-Protec powered anode to prevent corrosion, and city permit. Installation was smooth. Workmanship excellent. Passed inspection with no issues.

Update: In what I am pretty convinced was a total coincidence, shortly after the heat pump was installed our gas hot water heater stopped working. I couldn't find anything that the installer would have done to cause it since the symptom was that the gas flame would not stay on. I called Fuse to see what they had to say and within a hour two technicians came out to take a look. After a couple hours of troubleshooting they thought it might be the control board. Of note they didn't charge us for their time. The gas HWH was to be replaced by Fuse with a heat pump based HWH so it seemed silly to invest much effort. Unfortunately there wasn't one of their electricians available for a couple of weeks to install the needed sub-panel. On a follow up call to Fuse, I reminded them that we also have an EV charger in the garage that they might be able to temporarily "borrow" the circuit. The next day the team of Ronnie and Alex came out and installed the new HWH using the EV charger's circuit (having to use a public charger was a small price to pay to having hot water). Once again, a professional job with great attention to detail. Last week Zorik the electrician arrived as scheduled to complete the installation. He worked with me on where I would prefer the sub-panel be installed. Within a few hours, our EV charger was back in business. I appreciated that Zorik took the time to review what breakers were moved so that I could update my records. I was confident that the job (and the others) were all were properly compliant with the building codes. Worth noting, the technician from an independent company came out to do the duct work testing (which passed). As he was leaving the subject of Fuse came up. His comment was that they are the best in the Bay Area.
