Best Time to Buy an Air Conditioner for Your Home

HVAC technician installs an air conditioner at the best time to buy an air conditioner

Many people ask themselves, when is the best time to buy an air conditioner? And they’re right to do so, because the answer to this question can save a really big amount of money. In this article we will tell you which seasons are perfect for AC shopping and how to choose the best model at a favorable price.

The best time to buy an air conditioner depends on seasonal demand, discounts, and, of course, innovations. Let’s imagine that manufacturers have released a new high-tech device. What does that mean? That’s right: older versions are more affordable now; their price has decreased. The same is true for the off-season.

Seasonal Demand and Its Impact on Prices

It’s completely common for AC prices to fluctuate throughout the year due to seasonal demand. For example, during summer’s peak people tend to cool their homes and involuntarily create a very high demand for AC. Naturally, this causes seasonal price increases. In winter, the demand also goes up. But this time it’s for the models with a heating function.

However, the good news is that in spring and fall, stores hold sales. They offer discounts on last year’s models. That’s why the best time to buy air conditioners is during the off-season.

Benefits of Purchasing During Off-Peak Seasons

Buying in spring and fall offers many perks. We’ve already sorted out the pricing, but what else?

  • Quicker installation. Installers are available, so you can avoid a long wait.
  • A wide range of models. Both new and past year’s models are waiting for you at a reduced price.
  • There are simply fewer people in appliance stores. Why not consider that as an advantage too?

Autumn: The Ideal Season for Air Conditioner Purchases

During fall, retailers try to clear out stock and make big discounts on models left over from the summer season. This is the perfect time to buy an AC at a bargain price and install it without fuss. Only this time it’s not to cool your home; it’s to warm it.

Spring: Another Great Opportunity to Save

Many technicians and retailers believe that spring is also the best time to buy air conditioners. Stores start bringing in new models and sell off old ones at discounted prices. Plus, it’s easier to find techs to install anything you want. Want to see the services we offer? Check out our work on Instagram.

Winter and Summer: High-Demand Periods to Avoid

Imagine the faces of those who didn’t have time to take care of the heat for winter and the cold for summer. During this period, ACs are more expensive, and installation time is longer, so it’s not the best time to buy AC. Have you imagined their disappointment? This emotion will bypass you. At least because you are already aware of the seasonality of such shopping.

Leveraging Sales Events for Maximum Savings

Keep an eye out for major sales to make your benefits even greater:

Black Friday Deals

In the fall, at the end of November, you can find big discounts on HVAC appliances during Black Friday. Cool!

Amazon Prime Day Opportunities

Back in spring, Amazon Prime Day has great deals on the best time to buy AC unit.

End-of-Season Clearance Sales

In late spring and fall, stores get rid of excess as much as possible. That’s why they organize sales—a great chance to buy a quality air conditioner with a big discount.

Factors Influencing Air Conditioner Costs

The cost and best time to buy an air conditioner depend not only on seasonality (although this is a very important factor!), but also on several other things. These are also worth considering:

Technological Advancements and Pricing

Modern models with inverter technology are more expensive but are highly energy-efficient. So, save once or save all the time? The choice is yours. By the way, if you want to get the most out of your HVAC system, feel free to check out our video on upgrading for maximum efficiency.

Brand Reputation

Brands such as Daikin are not cheap, but they guarantee reliability. At Fuse, we actually work with this brand regularly. Read, for example, about one of our recent installations in Redwood City, CA.

Energy Efficiency Ratings and Long-Term Savings

Energy-efficient AC is a very good choice because it significantly reduces energy costs. How can you tell? Thanks to the SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio). The higher the SEER, the less electricity the unit consumes for the same cooling capacity. There are many myths surrounding this ratio, which we have decided to debunk in our article.

Tips for planning your air conditioner purchase

  • Feel free to spend your money on energy-efficient models to save money in the future.

We're just about to have our heat pump and new water heater installed, so I can't speak to that experience yet, but I had to say how helpful their sales rep, Jeff, was with all of my questions to get settled into a plan. I'm one of those people who like to know what's going on line by line, and his patience and knowledge was very appreciated!

I had a need to replace our 50G gas water heater. Received several quotes from various contractors. Fuse was the most cost-effective proposal. Quote included new Bradford White heater, new expansion tank (did not have one before), new gas supply line to the heater, new drain pan, new Corro-Protec powered anode to prevent corrosion, and city permit. Installation was smooth. Workmanship excellent. Passed inspection with no issues.

Henry and Alex did a fantastic job installing our new heat pump system! They worked hard over two days to get everything set up perfectly. They were punctual, professional, respectful of our home, and extremely knowledgeable. The new system is running great. Huge thanks to Henry and Alex for their hard work--I definitely recommend this team for your HVAC needs!

Update: In what I am pretty convinced was a total coincidence, shortly after the heat pump was installed our gas hot water heater stopped working. I couldn't find anything that the installer would have done to cause it since the symptom was that the gas flame would not stay on. I called Fuse to see what they had to say and within a hour two technicians came out to take a look. After a couple hours of troubleshooting they thought it might be the control board. Of note they didn't charge us for their time. The gas HWH was to be replaced by Fuse with a heat pump based HWH so it seemed silly to invest much effort. Unfortunately there wasn't one of their electricians available for a couple of weeks to install the needed sub-panel. On a follow up call to Fuse, I reminded them that we also have an EV charger in the garage that they might be able to temporarily "borrow" the circuit. The next day the team of Ronnie and Alex came out and installed the new HWH using the EV charger's circuit (having to use a public charger was a small price to pay to having hot water). Once again, a professional job with great attention to detail. Last week Zorik the electrician arrived as scheduled to complete the installation. He worked with me on where I would prefer the sub-panel be installed. Within a few hours, our EV charger was back in business. I appreciated that Zorik took the time to review what breakers were moved so that I could update my records. I was confident that the job (and the others) were all were properly compliant with the building codes. Worth noting, the technician from an independent company came out to do the duct work testing (which passed). As he was leaving the subject of Fuse came up. His comment was that they are the best in the Bay Area.
