Recommended thermostat settings for summer and winter

Ideal Thermostat Settings for Summer to Save Money

Summer is a season of boiling hot days, when you’d prefer to go to the beach instead of sitting at home with sweating and overheating. But with energy efficient thermostat settings, the ocean probably won’t see you for a while. In addition, your energy bill will be protected from scary big numbers.

Basically, your thermostat regulates the indoor air temperature by switching on and off your HVAC system. Whenever the air inside isn’t as hot or cool as you want this small device automatically sends signals to the system. Therefore, there are some thermostat settings that will influence the way it perform significantly. The best temperature during the summer season, is about 78°F when you’re chilling at home, so it’s perfectly cool. Of course, it might seem tempting to lower the temperature faster if you came into fully heated space, but this will inevitably lead to higher energy bills. In fact, when you’re away, you’d better raise the temperature set to 85°F. Your AC won’t run unnecessarily, but at the same time, there won’t be a heat buildup that takes ages to get rid of.

When winter falls, we crave for warmth without additional costs. Of course, you can have a billion plaids and sweaters on you, but it’s barely convenient to walk around in such an outfit. However, you can set your thermostat to chill down. The best heat temperature for energy saving is around 68°F during the day when you’re home. However, as a trusted HVAC contractor, we recommend you lower the temperature by 7–10 degrees when you’re asleep or away. It’ll both improve your sleep quality and significantly reduce heating costs. This is the best thermostat temperature to balance between comfort and savings.

Energy Saving Thermostat Settings That Actually Work

The key to the shortened energy bills is consistency in your energy saving thermostat settings. Here is a table with our suggestions on how to set your thermostat depending on your schedule.

ConditionSummer SettingsWinter Settings
When Home78°F (25–26°C) for comfort & savings68°F (20°C) for warmth & efficiency
When Away85°F (29°C) to reduce AC costs60–62°F (15–16°C) to save heating costs
NighttimeRaise slightly if comfortable with fansLower by 7–10°F for savings while sleeping
Best Energy-Saving TipUse ceiling fans & close blinds during heatLayer clothing & use blankets for extra warmth
Most Economical ChoiceHigher temp when away; fans to aid comfortLower nighttime temp; programmable thermostat

How Smart Thermostats Help with Efficient Thermostat Settings

Ideal thermostat setting

Smart thermostats got their name for a reason. The technology is designed to learn your schedule and adjust settings to achieve maximum comfort and efficiency.

Benefits include:

  • Remote control via smartphone.
  • Energy usage reports to track savings.
  • Automatic adjustments for the energy efficient thermostat settings.

Adjusting Thermostat Settings for Different Homes & Lifestyles

Of course, every household has unique needs. There are some customization recommendations on how to set your thermostat depending on who is living inside:

  • Families with kids. Slightly warmer settings of your HVAC system in summer and, on the other hand, slightly cooler in winter, can help children feel better.
  • Elderly residents. Take care of their health by setting temperatures 1-2 degrees higher during both seasons.
  • Empty homes during the day. Rely on setback temperatures to avoid wasting energy.

Common Mistakes with Thermostat Setting You Should Avoid

  1. Constantly adjusting the thermostat makes your system work harder.
  2. Setting extreme temperatures trying to cool or heat faster doesn’t actually speed things up, but increases energy bills.
  3. Ignoring maintenance can result into dirty filters, in turn they make your system less efficient.
  4. Forgetting about humidity, since it makes air feel hotter even at the same temperature.

Avoid these mistakes and you’ll have the perfect thermostat settings to save money.

How Optimal Thermostat Settings Lower Your Energy Bill

Energy efficient thermostat settings

So, after all, how does a thermostat lower utility bills? Simply, with the right settings you’ll use less energy to heat or cool air inside your home, when you don’t need it at full power. Hence, the prices are lower, while you still can enjoy a comfortable indoor temperature. At that point a programmable thermostat can save homeowners up to 10% annually on energy costs. Such thermostats can pay out themselves pretty soon and all you have to do is just make a perfect schedule. You can get all of these with a reliable AC installation company.

Igor (from Fuse) did an outstanding job resolving our HVAC issue. He was prompt and communicative, finding the root of the problem. Another company had been by previously and failed to diagnose the fault, whereas Igor figured it out in no time. He was able to find the Freon leak, repair the break, and then recharge the gas: all done in an afternoon. He also took the time to inspect our other unit for similar issues. I highly recommend Igor and Fuse!

Called about an issue we were having with the power at our location. Tech was scheduled and arrived on time. He also sent a text that when was en route. He found the issue and went to Home Depot to purchase a light fixture then installed it. This company is reliable and pricing was reasonable for the repairs that were done. Will definitely call if we run into another issue.

Update after installation: Installation only took one day, and was only for the heat pump water heater. (We'll replace the radiant heat boiler at a later date.) The Fuse project manager (Teo Pyndus-Pastukh) was knowledgeable and responsive, and the installers (Sergei M. and another man) worked quietly and cleaned up thoroughly afterward. It would have been helpful to have more information up-front about how long we would be without hot water during the installation (6 hours), how long it would be before we had hot water again after the installation (no delay), and how long the electricity would be off (it wasn't). It was also a surprise that there was no outside unit (the heat pump was in the water heater itself), and that a wifi app was required. None of those was explained before installation (so I'm keeping my rating at 4 stars). Original post: Heat pump installation takes A WEEK, and you'll be without (radiant) heat and hot water during that time. (I wanted to put that as the first sentence so readers will see it.) The 4 stars are for Teo Pyndus-Pastukh who came out to do the site inspection, was very thorough, was patient with our myriad questions, and gave us confidence in the system. HOWEVER, the install time wasn't mentioned and wasn't in any of the program info (from City of Palo Alto Utilities), and only after Teo's visit did we learn that installation takes a week and we won't have heat or hot water during that time. (I may be back with an update after the installation.)

We needed to move the condenser unit for our heat pump quickly due to construction contingencies, and Wilson from FUSE provided us a competitive bid and was able to work quickly with our contractor to help us make the move to ensure that our overall project wasn’t delayed. Their team stayed very late on Friday to get the job done - and left our system and site in great shape.

We were very happy with the service from Fuse. We did a conversation from gas stove to induction, which required capping the gas line, running a 240 line to the kitchen. We ended up needing some subpanel work to make things fit. Finally they hauled away the old gas stove and installed the new induction stove. The team was very professional, organized, polite. They arrived on time, and finished on time. Highly recommend.

We're just about to have our heat pump and new water heater installed, so I can't speak to that experience yet, but I had to say how helpful their sales rep, Jeff, was with all of my questions to get settled into a plan. I'm one of those people who like to know what's going on line by line, and his patience and knowledge was very appreciated!

Update: In what I am pretty convinced was a total coincidence, shortly after the heat pump was installed our gas hot water heater stopped working. I couldn't find anything that the installer would have done to cause it since the symptom was that the gas flame would not stay on. I called Fuse to see what they had to say and within a hour two technicians came out to take a look. After a couple hours of troubleshooting they thought it might be the control board. Of note they didn't charge us for their time. The gas HWH was to be replaced by Fuse with a heat pump based HWH so it seemed silly to invest much effort. Unfortunately there wasn't one of their electricians available for a couple of weeks to install the needed sub-panel. On a follow up call to Fuse, I reminded them that we also have an EV charger in the garage that they might be able to temporarily "borrow" the circuit. The next day the team of Ronnie and Alex came out and installed the new HWH using the EV charger's circuit (having to use a public charger was a small price to pay to having hot water). Once again, a professional job with great attention to detail. Last week Zorik the electrician arrived as scheduled to complete the installation. He worked with me on where I would prefer the sub-panel be installed. Within a few hours, our EV charger was back in business. I appreciated that Zorik took the time to review what breakers were moved so that I could update my records. I was confident that the job (and the others) were all were properly compliant with the building codes. Worth noting, the technician from an independent company came out to do the duct work testing (which passed). As he was leaving the subject of Fuse came up. His comment was that they are the best in the Bay Area.
